Family Life

2017 is here and it feels somewhat unreal that we are one more year down! It goes without saying that 2016 was another big year in the Shaw household and I am really pleased with what we have achieved with Blue Ticking. With the business we set ourselves various goals which were both financial and creative. We wanted to try some new things and also consolidate what we do. When there is so much going on both personally and professionally it's commonplace to focus more on all the ...

Tomorrow Miss Edith will be heading back to school and into Year One. This in itself is quite remarkable given it only seems like yesterday I was waving her off into Reception. It's funny how things change in a year and how much she has grown up from that nervous looking four year old by our front door. Fast forward a year and the summer holidays were upon us. The timing was perfect because both kids were pretty much on their knees with tiredness so I was looking forward to a ...

This time last week we were in the midst of our half term holiday in north Cornwall. We were adorned with sunny weather, unlike the rest of the country it seems, and therefore spent most of our days mucking about on the beach. It was without doubt one of the most relaxing and care free holidays as a family we have had. Obviously the glorious sunshine helped massively, but the location of the house which was 10m from the beach played a big part too. It meant we could pop back and ...

At the beginning of last year I wrote a post about brilliant storage solutions. For my next foray into this area I thought I would give you a glimpse into our home and some of my favourite storage solutions in each room. Naturally some Blue Ticking originals feature, whilst others are from the good old high street and other one off shops I have stumbled across via work. Whatever I buy, it has to tick three important boxes; it needs to look good, provide useful and practical ...

We are now a few weeks into January which has given me some time to reflect on the year that was 2015! In short it was a pretty good one. It provided lots of learning, fun and change, both on a personal and professional front. It's hard to believe that Blue Ticking will be two in May and when I look back at last year i'm really pleased with the progress we have made. We have reached more people both locally and further afield, sold many more goods than the previous year, (which ...

CHRISTMAS, ARGH! How is it nearly upon us? Like many of you no doubt, I am slightly dumbfounded that we are fast approaching the end of November and therefore the beginning of December. It's officially action stations in the Shaw household, well for me anyway! The mammoth present buying must commence and I need to get myself organised. I tend to do a mixture of online shopping and then I have the odd day when I hit the shops. The latter has yet to happen so I have spent many a ...

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about Miss Edith's impending journey into school. Now she has started and we are in week three I thought it might be nice to follow it up with how things are progressing. Day one arrived pretty quickly and it was filled with both excitement and nerves, the latter being felt by me and not Miss E! She happily put on her rather large uniform and carefully chose her clip for the big day! Naturally we had the obligatory 'front door first day at ...

In exactly three weeks Miss Edith will set off for her first day at 'big school'. Over the last few months I have spent a lot of time thinking about this day as i'm sure many of you have. It's a weird one because it's filled with mixed emotions. On those challenging of days it can't come quick enough, but on those less challenging of days I want it to be further away. I won't lie, there have been tears of varying nature. John has been subjected to irrational tears, sad tears ...

I do love a holiday. Not only because you get to hang out with family and friends more, but life is generally run at a slower pace. There seems to be less rushing about and trying to get out of the house at the crack of dawn. It was a real novelty to be still in our pj's at 10am, though i'm not sure the Sainsbury's delivery man felt the same! The Easter weekend is always a highlight and this one was no different; time spent with friends and family and enjoying this unusually ...

It's official, I love Spring! Not just because it feels lighter and warmer, but because it makes me want to venture outside and do stuff. Whilst we have had a few sunny days already, yesterday was the first day we could all get out in the garden and enjoy it as a family. High up on Edith's 'to do' list  was to make mud pies. Having grown up on a farm where mud was in abundance this used to be one of my favourite activities too. Happy to continue this tradition we both got stuck ...

So today was Miss Maggie's 2nd birthday and we have been in full celebration mode. I'm not sure she was completely aware of what was going on, but she has certainly mastered the art of opening presents and the word "mine" has been shouted out with great intent on a number of occasions! It's been lovely to see her so happy and for Edith to join in with all the excitement. Maggie was born two weeks early on a chilly January morning. I knew it was unlikely I would reach full ...
