Out and About

I am writing this in quiet disbelief that Blue Ticking is three today! It hardly seems like yesterday that I was dreaming up the idea whilst on maternity leave with Miss Maggie. So much has happened since then; there have been some real highs and some definite lows. I don't want to focus too much on the latter, but it's important to say that whilst this working for yourself and setting up your own business malarky is hugely rewarding, it's also bloody scary and ...

The next few months at Blue Ticking HQ are going to be very exciting because we have lots going on and lots to work on. One of the things which we are busy beavering away with is getting ready for our two pop up shops at The Medicine Garden, Cobham in November. We have been keen to try something like this for a while and after a few visits to check out the site it seemed like the perfect fit for us. For those who have yet to have the pleasure of going there, it's an ...

As you will know from my last post we are opening a concession at the beginning of September in the wonderful Manns of Cranleigh. I thought I would share how our preparations are coming along by giving you an insight into what I have been working on in the last few days. I have had a great couple of days focusing on the space which has been really fun. Yesterday I organised a meeting with a company to talk signage and today I have spent quite a few hours at my desk trying to ...

As many of you will be aware, Blue Ticking had its first birthday at the beginning of May. It has been a wonderful opening year with lots of ups and some downs, but mainly ups! A few days before our first birthday we had one of those many 'up' moments with some brilliant news. We have been in talks with a local store called Manns of Cranleigh, about the possibility of letting us have a space to sell and showcase our goods. The great news is they have said yes, whoop ...

This morning I did something I have never done before. I went for my first country walk on my own since having children! No biggy you are probably thinking, but actually it was. It felt very indulgent because I don't have a dog to exercise and I was meant to be cracking on with some work on the computer amongst other things. I just had a sudden urge to get out and have some time on my own away from everything. I can't lie, the constant "it was mine first" and "but I didn't have a ...

My husband says our home is slowly turning into a Blue Ticking showroom! I’m just happy to say I’ve finally found some beautiful children’s furniture after a long time looking and I love showing it off. We recently moved to a new house so at last the lovely goods I’ve purchased from Blue Ticking over the past year finally have a home and are being put to use. My first purchases were these two gorgeous wall cabinets. What caught my eye with both of them was ...

At the weekend we hit the big smoke with the two kids. John and I lived there for ten years before moving to our current home so always relish the opportunity to go back. We are lucky living near Guildford that it's so accessible. We did, however, pick a day where there was engineering works, so what would usually be a 35 minute journey turned into an hour and 15 minutes. No biggy we thought, but one forgets that a two year olds love of trains may diminish rather quickly. So, ten ...

Setting up a new business and looking after two small children is fabulous, but busy and at times very fraught. I often feel very guilty that I don't do enough with Edith and Maggie, or at least things which are meaningful or pure and simple fun. So one of my goals for 2015 is to switch off more (from Blue Ticking) when I am with them, and spend more days out as a family. We put this into practice last weekend and decided to hit Brighton which luckily for us is only about 40 ...

So 2015 is here, which I can hardly believe. Where has the last 12 months gone? For the Shaw household it has been quite a whirlwind of kids mixed in with setting up a new business. Though it hasn't always been easy, one thing it has has been is an awful lot of fun and hugely motivating. This is why for me, going back to work this week isn't too much of a trial. Don't get me wrong I still hate getting up in the dark and cold, and don't always relish heading off to what is ...

So the last week has been everything; incredibly exciting, nerve wracking and somewhat stressful. We now have a brilliant new website and to say I am over the moon is an understatement.  It is so satisfying to see everything come together and the various things you thought about many many months ago being bought to life. It's exactly how I wanted it to look. It showcases our brilliant goods wonderfully and I hope is a joy to navigate around! Simple, clean, fun and stylish was ...

So Christmas is virtually upon us and we in the Shaw household are gradually gearing ourselves up for the big day. With a 3 1/2 year old and a soon to be two year old, excitement levels are reaching fever pitch. Each morning I seem to go through the same ritual of trying to explain that it's nearly Christmas day, but not quite. Once the realisation has set in they happily get back to screaming, chasing each other and respectively idolising Peppa Pig and Queen Elsa. I'm not sure ...
