For the love of Vintage!

It goes without saying that we at Blue Ticking are passionate about a bit of vintage and it seems we aren’t the only ones! Over the last decade the love of vintage inspired interiors has grown significantly and people seem to be falling back in love with the wonderfully old, a bit knackered and memory inducing pieces of furniture. Our home is full of the latter and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Each piece tells a different story and they tend to be brilliantly made and extremely resilient. Always good when you have kids hanging around! So why do people seem to have fallen back in love with the vintage style? I think much of it has to do with the fact that vintage is timeless and stylish. Many of the modern trends come and go and so you could find yourself replacing furniture constantly to keep up with the next new trend. Vintage however, has that really charm that seems to transcend styles and it can still look great in years to come. People don’t seem to mind it might have marks or looks a bit worn around the edges because they represent moments from a previous life. I also like the fact that you can still mix it with more modern and contemporary pieces. We are certainly not adverse to a bit of IKEA and I am all over your modern prints and typography. We literally have them dotted all over the house!

There is also the draw of it being reused and re loved which appeals to those who are keen to recycle and not buy ‘new’ all of the time. This seems particularly relevant at the moment where there is a real emphasis on doing more to make the most of what we already have. As mentioned above I think people also like the fact that it feels nostalgic and can evoke memories that have meaning. One of the pieces of furniture in our house that particularly resonates with me is in Edith’s room. It’s an occasional chair that my mum had in her family and has since been given to me. When we lived in London I reupholstered it in a black ticking (of course!) for our bedroom and when Edith came along I used it as my nursing chair. It nows resides in her room and she loves it because it has very much become her ‘reading’ chair. I hope when she is older it will move to wherever she lives and it will bring back lots of happy reading together memories.

Our kitchen bench holds a special place in John’s heart. It was in his family kitchen when he was a child and somehow it made it’s way back to him and is now very much part of our family and family life. The kids love it as they can climb on and off very easily. As a consequence it’s falling apart in a few places after years of bums landing on it and it most definitely has the odd mark on it, but that’s what makes it even more special and so full of charm. It has the added bonus of having lift up seats which means we can store all the kids craft items inside, result! It’s also great when their friends come for tea because they can all sit together. Saves a few arguments, until to get to what colour plate/knife and fork/cup everyone wants of course!

I don’t think I can write a piece about vintage furniture without mentioning the vintage school desk. This is the most popular piece of furniture that Blue ticking sell and the one we always get requests for. It goes without saying that we have a couple in our house. We chose the vintage all wooden lift up lid desks and Edith and Maggie love them. They are solid and have the added bonus of being able to hide away all their ‘stuff’ under the lids! Once they become a bit too big for them we will probably keep them and use as side tables, thus having another lease of life!

For all these reasons you can totally see why vintage has had a rebirth and is now very firmly back in favour with us all. If you would like to get into the vintage act why not take a look at the many goods we have on sale and ready to head to a brilliant and super stylish home! Don’t forget that whilst we brand ourselves as a kids company, most of the goods we sell will look fab anywhere in the home! I am also a massive fan of any vintage interior books so if you are in need of a bit of inspiration here are a few of my personal favourites 🙂 vintage-interiors-1
