Storage in the Shaw Household!

At the beginning of last year I wrote a post about brilliant storage solutions. For my next foray into this area I thought I would give you a glimpse into our home and some of my favourite storage solutions in each room. Naturally some Blue Ticking originals feature, whilst others are from the good old high street and other one off shops I have stumbled across via work. Whatever I buy, it has to tick three important boxes; it needs to look good, provide useful and practical storage and stand the test of time. If it’s for a kids space it also needs to be accessible for them because I have reached the point where I can’t be doing with the ‘getting everything out and putting it away for them” approach. Storage is also especially important in our house because nothing is ‘inbuilt’ so we are constantly having to find new ways to keep everything in its place! MISS EDITH’S ROOM My eye is also always drawn to colour and particularly anything bright. When I saw this yellow shelf on the Molly Meg websiteI knew I just had to get it for Miss Edith’s room.  It goes wonderfully well with the other items and is a great contrast to some of the more vintage pieces. Plus, it’s nice and deep so it’s possible to house quite a few things on it. kids-storage-5 Her room is of course full of Blue Ticking items and this old post office pigeon hole unit has to be one of my favourites. I love the industrial feel and the fact it can be filled with so many different things. It stores everything from socks and tights to all Edith’s hair clips and purses! kids-storage-14 The wooden pigeon hole unit was another great find on one of our many treasure hunts. Again it provides great storage, but Edith has used it more to display some of her special toys and photos. We also lined the back with the Quention Blake wallpaper which she has on one wall in her bedroom. kids-storage-4 KITCHEN I love anything vintage as you know and have always had my eye on old apple crates which we could use for storage. We bought two and ended up with one in our kitchen to hold some of my favourite glasses and china and one in our bedroom to store books etc. They add a rustic charm and uniqueness to the space which I love, plus they provide great storage and a chance to showcase some of your favourites! kids-storage-1 Adding to the colour in the house is this very handy box unit from John Lewis. It resides in our utility area and houses all sorts of bits and bobs, from washing tablets to batteries and tea lights. Note the rather special sticker addition thanks to daughter number one! kids-storage-2 PLAYROOM Good old IKEA features throughout the house because it offers both functional options and a simplicity which I like. This metal trolley is ideal for all their drawing pens, pencils and colouring books. They love it too because it sits in the playroom and they can grab anything they want really easily. Plus it can move around the room depending on where you fancy getting crafty! kids-storage-12 MISS MAGGIE’S ROOM Miss Maggies room is tighter on space so we have had to be a bit clever with where we put things. We bought two of these green metal storage units but decided to keep one for ourselves because I couldn’t resist its look and knew it would be perfect for on top of her chest of drawers. The cabinet above was an Ebay purchase and stores all of the kids medicines and plasters etc. kids-storage-13 I also love these really simple shelves from IKEA which we have utilised for books both in Maggie’s room and the playroom. We rotate their favourites fairly often and again they can easily pick the books they want to look at. They aren’t deep either which means you can’t overcrowd the shelf so on the whole it looks fairly organised, well most of the time!!! kids-storage-8 We have so many soft toys in the Shaw house and I just didn’t know what to do with them all. Some have found their way to the charity shop and the rest now reside in this fab and fun fabric bag. kids-storage-10 GROWN UP BEDROOM Again we have no inbuilt storage in our bedroom so i’m always on the hunt for unusual ways to store all our different items. This brilliant vintage filing cabinet is great for my jewellery and makeup. kids-storage-9 Here is the other apple crate kids-storage-3 BATHROOM As you can see from some of the other storage items I do love anything with an industrial feel. I found this fab metal wire storage unit at Kempton and whilst it started off in Maggie’s room it now lives in the family bathroom and is the perfect place to hide away the towels. The canvas bags above keep hidden all the things you don’t want on show so much like the necessary toilet rolls and bathroom cleaners! kids-storage-7 To introduce a bit more colour we added this rather striking medicine cabinet, a snip at £10 from an antiques fair! kids-storage-6 LOUNGE Our lounge is on the small side so to allow for more seating options and to help house all of my many interiors books The wonderful John made me this fab window seat. It’s a lovely focal point for the room and very handy when we have people round. kids-storage-11 Storage is essential for every household, especially families where the influx of toys and ‘stuff’ is never ending. We at Blue Ticking HQ strongly believe however, that it can be both functional and stylish and at no point should you have to compromise on either! Do have a peruse on our website to see what different storage options we currently have available.
